"Jiujitsu" - Japanese for
"gentle art"
Origin: Japan
Classification: A "Soft" martial
art.
Clothing: Practitioners wear
a heavy gi.
Description:
Jiu jitsu differs from karate
and taekwondo in that it uses
takedowns, holds and locks to
deal with its opponent. Jiu Jitsu
is also known as grappling or
wrestling. Strikes with the hands
and feet are secondary to the
locks and chokes that jiu jitsu
practitioners study.
Practitioners of Jiu Jitsu use
strikes and kicks to set up their
primary methods of grappling,
joint locking, choking and dislocation
techniques. Jiu jitsu is used
to train military and police
officials and is a great supplement
to any martial arts style.
Modern day Jiu Jitsu is gaining
huge amounts of popularity with
the Ultimate Fighting Championships
and Pride Fighting Tournaments.
At least a general knowledge
of Jiu Jitsu is essential for
any of the top competitors.
The Study of Jiu Jitsu will
help develop the body as
a whole.
